I bought these because I wanted flash cards that didn't have pictures on them and distinguised short and long vowels with different colors. Although, this product is mainly used as letter tiles for pocket charts that are used in classrooms, I simply needed flash cards. This product works great for this flash card purposes (although I would prefer the size of player poker cards thus a 4 star rating). I also use these to make real and nonsense words by manipulating beginning, middle, and end letters. I turn this into a game that my students and my personal kids love. These cards are durable, thick, and will last a long time! I got this as a birthday gift for my three year old granddaughter.
The size is perfect and takes up very little space, just fold it and store it. No more magnets in the kitchen under foot. The magnets are made of a strongfoam so if you step in them there's no pain! And I don't have to worry about the magnets falling out and being swallowed. The letter and numbers are nice bright primary colors for learning, and have a nice simple design on them. Plus the dry erase markers are great learning to write and just fun drawing and doodling. Everything washes up just fine.
My daughter loves the memory game and has been struggling leaning her letters. I bought this thinking that it would be a fun way to get her a little extra practice. She loves it! I like that you match the upper and lower case letters but that each one has the same picture on them (ie both Q cards have the same queen on them). I think that helps trying to figure out the letter in the beginning. 'What is the picture?
What sound does that make? What letter makes that sound?' We play that if you make a match you must say the letter to get to keep the match.
We have had this game a few weeks and already I am seeing more confidence in my daughters letter recognition. The quality of the cards is great.
At 5 I am sure that this is probably a short term. My little one is 22 months, and knows her colors and shapes fairly well. I thought these cards would make a nice addition to her playthings.
I know the recommended age is 3+, but most little ones know their colors/shapes fairly early.I had to take out some of the shapes (cube, cone, cylinder, etc) because when I tried the set with her, she couldn't comprehend the difference between cone and triangle yet, understandably. As for the colors set, I couldn't understand why some colors were repeated in different hues, and some were not. There's one card with both black and white on it, but no single black card. (huh?) Again, had to adjust the set. The numbers cards have enough for 2 sets and some replacements, but again, why the uneven sets?? Maybe I'm not using them the way they should be.
